Gallium powder (tannins)

Gallium nuts (Quercus infectoria), or "bugals", are an exceptional source of tannins.
In natural dyeing, gallium powder has been used for centuries to help mordant cellulosic fibers. Tannins from gallium powder do not tend to change the color of the textile when used as a pre-mordant.

These "nuts" arise when an insect lays its eggs on a young oak branch, and this reacts by producing tannins that harden.

Gallium nuts produce a light beige tone, but when we add iron sulfate to the bath, the color changes to shades between gray and black.

Recommendation:
- For the pre-treatment of cellulosic fibers, it is recommended to use 10-15% of powder in relation to the weight of the fibers.
- To dye with gallium nuts, it is recommended to use 10-50% of powder in relation to the weight of the fibers.
